Additional Info:
Since I updated my iPad form 3.2 to OS 4.2, Str8ts crashes here too. I pretty sure Str8ts doesn't work with any OS 4 based iPad/iPod/iPhones.

Unfortunately nobody of the authors reads this forum. Or doesn't care, whatever. I wonder why this forum has the headline "Str8ts discussion with Jeff Widderich and Andrew Stuart.", no reaction at all for four weeks. I tried to contact them via their support website with the same result: none. This is really frustrating - I really like this game, I'm solving every day the "sueddeutsche zeitung" print and want to play it also on my mobile phone, but if you don't know if it crashes on the next clicks or not it's annoying. The reputation of this great game goes down the drain because of the lousy implementation. The user comments in the app store are on the same line.

I'm using iphone 4 OS 4.1 and ipad OS 4.2.
Yesterday evening I tested new App Ver 2.4 on iphone: crashes after a few clicks.

First off sorry for not responding sooner. As you can see from all the updates we have provided, that we have been working on this issue. The developers and myself have newer devices iPhone 4 and iPad. Str8ts works fine on all our devices even after extensive testing.

We did find this crashing issue and with this 2.4 update we did fix the issue you are describing.(agin it only happened on 1 device in England ) So with 2.4 we are confident that your devices should work fine.

Could you please first remove the current version and reinstall 2.4. I think will do the trick.
If not please inform me.

Hello Jeff,

I already have tested 2.4 but it still crashed, particulary when I have turned the iphone off and on during I was solving a puzzle. But I did not deinstall the older version before.

According to your advise I tried it again: I deinstalled 2.4, made a complete reboot of the iphone, installed 2.4 again, and voila: it looks like it's stable now. I cannot believe it, do we have Christmas already?? I'm still a bit suspicious, I'm afraid that it will crash again when I'm really deep in a puzzle half the way to the solution. I had this so many times in the past and I don't want to repeat what kind of comments came over my lips then. Let's knock on wood.

Because it is not the standard process I recommend that you should add a hint on the App Store site that one should reinstall the old software before, not just install the new one over the old. And if that doesn't help, reboot before install.

Thank's a lot for your reply and help. Great game!

Stefan

iPhone App still crashes

Hello Jeff,

after a few weeks testing my first enthusiasm has cooled down, here are my experimental results:

If I play a game, make my entries but do not solve the puzzle completely and turn the iphone off or switch to another app and come back to Str8ts, the app is unstable and tends to crash. Or better say: the more other apps have been used in the meantime, the more likely Str8ts will crash.

The only way to preserve the current status is to solve a puzzle completely and then close or interrupt Str8ts In all other cases the efforts may be lost. I'm missing the "Save current status" Button, this would certainly solve the issue.

I'm using Str8ts 2.3 on iphone OS 4.1

Regards,
Stefan

Latest Update:

I'm using Str8ts 2.5 on iphone 4 with OS4.1 and ipad 1 with OS4.2. Results are the same:

Str8ts is only stable if you play a complete game in one session, otherwise you have to be prepared for crashes.
That means:
1. Str8ts App has to be completely stopped. Double Click the Home Button, if there is a Str8ts App running, kill it.
2. Start Str8ts
3. Play a game and solve it completely.
This works without any crashes and is to my multi-month experience the ONLY WAY to play this game without frustrations.

But if you interrupt an already started game, i.e. turn off the iphone, turn it on later on, start another App like e-mail, go back to Str8ts ... then you have to be prepared that it crashes after some clicks. I've repeated this multiple times, no way, it crashes. Unfortunately I cannot play a game until its end all the time, sometimes I need to interrupt it. The result is ALWAYS that on the next start it crashes after some clicks.

Jeff, could you please give a comment on this.

Hello Stefan,

We have rebuilt Str8ts from the ground up. The code we have has been fixed and repaired by many developers
everyone promising us a fix. What really amazes us the most is the UK and the US seem to have no issues and Germany and Canada do. If you look at the ratings on itunes this is backed up by this statement.

No excuses we are rebuilding it the iPad version is done so it will be quite easy to complete an iPhone version.
Stefan believe me this issue has driven us mad as well. We have acted and updated endless times.

Hello Jeff,
thx for the very quick answer. As I am a developer too (not iphone apps), I can fully understand that this issue drives you mad. Anyway, there's something wrong with your app, other apps work fine, i.e. Angry Birds, I've never seen any crashes and I'm using it the same way.
Hopefully the rebuilded ipad version solves the problem.

Stefan

Hello Jeff,
this evolves into a never ending story. Yesterday I've downloaded Version 3.0 on my iPad (OS 4.3.1) with following results:
  1. very good: no hang ups - so far (two days testing). Unbelievable, this is one for the books! Unfortunately I need OS 4.3.1, so I cannot update this new version on my iPhone, which still uses 4.1 unless there's a jailbreak available. Unfortunately Part 2: I deleted the old version on my iphone before installing the new one (and then I got the message, sorry, I need 4.3.1). Now I have no str8ts at all on my iphone, I need to wait for the jailbreak.
  2. not so good: missing the "skip game" or "next game" button in the menu. This is particularly annoying because of the bug in item no 4.
  3. bad: when I started the third game on Ace Level (I think, it was #603, I cannot reproduce it, see item no 2), it was showing a black field in white. I think it was position x=9, y=6, assuming lower left is x=1,y=1. I wanted to click into that field (because it was white), but the field didn't change it's color. I tried it several times, then I closed the app, started the app and restarted the game again, surprise, the field was black.
  4. very bad: After I solved this third game on Ace Level, I got the obvious "Congratulations.." message, clicked OK, but then nothing happened, I was not able to get into the next level. I tried it again and again, redo/undo etc, always the same, Congratulations but no next level. I cleared the board and played it again (#!#$§%), wow, I was able to get into the next level, No. 604. But at the end of this game happened exactly the same and this time I was unable to get into the next level even with clear board, restart ipad. I gave up. It's frustrating. Will it ever work?
At all: why did you change the menu? It was ok before, no complaints. Same with new button style. From my opinion it was better to have different buttons for entering numbers or number combinations, instead toggling. Anyway, this is not so important. Cruicial is stability.

Stable but dead end

(the bugs I've listed in the previous mail are still open and unsolved!)

Latest News:
I've installed latest str8ts version 3.1 on my iphone with OS 4.3.3. It seem's to be stable, no hangups at all up to now. But I'm stucked on game #604 (Ace Level). I solved it, I got the "congratulations" screen, but I don't get into the next game. No chance to play the 196 remaining games. Same as in my last report on ipad.

Perhaps some responsible person will ever read this and do something ... but when i look into the itunes reviews, I don't believe it anymore.
